Industry Standard Leader for Mission Critical Wireless Mobile System Solutions

Summary

Alan Wilson
Industry leader for mission critical radio systems. I held senior technical positions in companies with a goal to successfully plan and build state of the art wireless mobile systems and networks for mission critical voice and data.

I am a Chairman of the TIA committee developing a Joint LMR LTE standard with 3GPP and Mission Critical Push-To-Talk (MC-PTT), which will be an expected $10B capital investment. I have Chaired a TDMA standard project in TIA for Project 25 Phase 2 in 2007. I had the principal responsibility for Motorola’s Mission Critical radio system architecture through 2006. I was a principal architect for the Motorola Astro product line that is the current standard for public safety radio systems in North America, with revenues to Motorola of $2.9B in 2Q 2006. I was recognized with the Dan Noble Fellow award by Motorola in 1999. I am a subject matter expert for patents related to mission critical mobile radio systems.

Timeline

  1. -
Principal Member of Technical Staff, Motorola

Developed the standard for Project 25 Phase 1.  The core publication was the FDMA Common Air Interface standard, TIA-102.BAAA.

  2. -
Distinguished Member of Technical Staff, Motorola

Developed Wide Band Data Standard for Scalable Advanced Modulation (SAM) that was published as in part as TIA-902.BAAD.

  3. -
    Principal Engineer, Tyco Electronics

I was elected to chair the TR-8.12 TDMA subcommittee to develop the TDMA standard for Project 25 Phase 2.  The subcommittee published the TIA-102.BBAC standard for the TDMA protocol.  This doubled the spectrum efficiency of Project 25 and it permitted the development of the 700 band.

  4. -
    Senior Systems Engineer, Harris Corporation

I was elected to Chair the TIA TR-8.8 subcommittee to develop a Joint LMR LTE standard for future interoperability of private radio systems with mobile 4G system.  I initiated the JLMRLTE project with ATIS to develop a joint standard, and TR-8.8 published the TIA-4973.201 standard for requirements for MC PTT supplementary services.

I also proposed and advocated a standard for improved security for Project 25 based on link layer encryption technology and federal security standards.
